Key Matchups
141: #2 Sr. Kevin Jack (4-0) vs. #15 R-So. Alex Madrigal (9-2)
The lone battle of ranked opponents takes place at 141 pounds. Jack is ranked #2 in every major poll and off to a 4-0 start – all bonus point wins in duals. Madrigal was an NCAA Qualifier at 133 pounds last year, and placed second at both the Hokie Invite and Navy Classic, which included an 11-7 win over #9 Tyler Smith of Bucknell. Last year, Jack scored a tech fall in the ODU dual at 141, while Madrigal lost an 11-5 decision to Sean Fausz at 133 pounds.

157: R-Fr. Hayden Hidlay (4-0) vs. R-So. Larry Early (8-2)
While both are not ranked by InterMat this week, they both appear in various other polls. Hidlay is #13 by TrackWrestling and #19 by OpenMat, while Early is #10 by OpenMat and #17 by TrackWrestling. Hidlay is 4-0 this season coming off his redshirt season, with three tech falls and a major decision in duals. Early holds a win over Stanford All-American, #7 Paul Fox, 10-4 at the Hokie Invite and was second at the Navy Classic last time out. Early did not wrestle in last year's dual.
New Faces
Although NC State returns a total of 10 NCAA Qualifiers, the current lineup does feature as many as eight changes from the group NC State sent to last year's NCAAs.
R-Sr. Pete Renda returns to 184 after redshirting last year after his third place finish in 2016. So. Tommy Cox is starting at 125, going back and forth with R-Jr. Sean Fausz.
A pair of redshirt-freshmen are current starters, while a third is competing for the starting spot. Hayden Hidlay (157) and Daniel Bullard (174) both took redshirts last season, as did Tariq Wilson who is battling new starter R-Jr. Jamel Morris for the spot at 133.
A trio of 2017 NCAA Qualifiers have changed weight classes for this season. R-Jr. Jamal Morris has jumped up two weights from 133 to 149, while R-Sr. Michael Macchiavello has gone from 184 to 197 and R-Jr. Malik McDonald from 197 to heavyweight.
The only two at their same weight from last season are Sr. Kevin Jack at 141 and R-Sr. Brian Hamann at 165. Â
Series vs. Old Dominion
Since 1981, NC State holds an 11-5-1 edge in duals against Old Dominion, including a 5-2 advantage when the two teams have met in Raleigh. The teams will be meeting for the fourth straight season, with the Pack winning all three duals. The Pack won in 2015 at ODU 21-15, in Raleigh in 2016, 26-15, and last year at ODU 25-13.
Â
Last year vs. Old Dominion
NC State got bonus point wins in three of its first four individual wins, and the Wolfpack came away with a 25-13 road win at Old Dominion. The Pack won the first three matches to jump out to a 14-0 lead, and 18-3 at the midway point. On the night, NC State won six of the 10 bouts, with four wins being for bonus points.
