RALEIGH – The NC State women's basketball team came away from its only exhibition game of the 2017-18 season with a win, defeating Lee University 57-42 inside Reynolds Coliseum Thursday night.
Senior Akela Maize tallied 13 points to lead all scorers. Senior Chelsea Nelson and sophomore Aislinn Konig joined her in posting double figures, each scoring 10 points. The Wolfpack took advantage of 29 points off of 25 turnovers by the Flames and capitalized on 20-25 (.800) shooting from the free throw line.
"As we expected, we've got a long way to go," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "We have a lot of new players out there; a lot of young players. I've known Marty Rowe from Lee a long time, been familiar with their program, and he does a great job. We knew they could shoot the heck out of it, and they did a nice job in the second half. We struggled offensively to score the ball. We're going to have to figure that out. We're going to have to put up more points than that to be successful at this level. Like I said, a lot of work ahead of us, a long way to go."
The Wolfpack held the Flames to just single-digit scoring in the first two quarters to take a 29-12 advantage into the halftime break. Lee responded well in the second half, shooting 12-26 (.461) during the final 20 minutes and 4-7 from distance in the fourth quarter.
Led by five points from Nelson and four from Konig over the course of the final 4:54, NC State scored 13 of the final 20 points in the contest to arrive at the final count of 57-42.
NC State will officially open the 44th season in program history on Friday, Nov. 10 at Reynolds Coliseum in a matchup against Jacksonville at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
