NC State has not yet trailed in two games this season
November 12, 2017

RALEIGH – Led by a career-high 21 points from sophomore Lucky Rudd, the NC State women's basketball team earned its eighth consecutive 2-0 start to a season Sunday afternoon by taking down the Davidson Wildcats 73-49 inside Reynolds Coliseum.

NC State (2-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Rudd's 21 points. Senior Chelsea Nelson posted her second double-digit scoring game of the season with 15 points, as did senior Akela Maize, who finished with 10 points. Freshman Kai Crutchfield added 11 of her own in just the second game of her career.

"Going into practice, we have a different mindset," Rudd said in the postgame press conference. "This is a new team, so we just needed a game to get everything under control. Now that we have played that game, I feel as though the flow of the offense will eventually come to us because we are so used to each other now."

NC State had a positive assist to turnover ratio for the second straight game and forced the Wildcats into 19 miscues of their own, scoring 21 points as a result. The teams each recorded 39 rebounds apiece, with Nelson collecting a game high of eight.

Preseason Atlantic-10 honoree Justine Lyon led Davidson with 12 points on 4-9 shooting. She was the lone Wildcat to achieve double figures in the contest.

"It was nice to see some threes go through the rim," NC State head coach Wes Moore said. "That was a good change from the other night. Lucky (Rudd) had a great game, obviously. She shows it every day in practice, so it was just nice to see her be able to carry it over to the game. I thought (freshman) Kai Crutchfield did a good job also coming off the bench. Chelsea (Nelson) and Akela (Maize) do their thing, and we just have to have some people around them knock down some shots. It was good to see that today and hopefully we will gain some momentum and confidence from that and continue in the games ahead."

The Wolfpack jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first three minutes of play and never looked back, leading from start to finish in the win over the Wildcats. In 80 minutes of basketball during the young 2017-18 season, NC State has yet to trail.

Crutchfield nailed a deep three in the second quarter to register her first career bucket. She remained hot from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes, hitting a total of four triples on her way to recording 11 first-half points.

Davidson (1-1) put up a fight, knocking down six three pointers in the first half, but the Pack capitalized on 14 turnovers by the Wildcats to take a 43-23 lead into the break.

NC State continues play at home on Wednesday against UNC-Asheville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Reynolds Coliseum with live video coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
