Seniors Chelsea Nelson and Akela Maize combine for 39 points
November 10, 2017

RALEIGH – The NC State women's basketball team never trailed Friday evening en route to beginning a season 1-0 for the 15th consecutive time, earning a 64-44 win over Jacksonville inside Reynolds Coliseum.

NC State dominated down low, scoring 46 points in the paint to Jacksonville's 10. Seniors Chelsea Nelson and Akela Maize played large roles in the effort, notching new career highs with 24 and 15 points, respectively. Nelson was a blistering 9-12 (.750) from the field during her 32 minutes on the court.

Redshirt sophomore guard Kaila Ealey led all players with 10 rebounds. She and her teammates won the rebounding battle by a 49-40 margin.

"Obviously, trying to be a bit more positive, we got a W," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "We had more assists than turnovers. We won the rebound battle. We did a few things well. But there are some growing pains. You graduate four senior starters who had been in the program for the past few years. It was almost like having four extra coaches out on the court. Now, some other people are having to step up. I have a lot of confidence in this team, but we need to figure a few things out in a hurry, clean a few things up, and get better."

The Wolfpack took a 29-24 lead into the halftime break but hit another gear at the start of the third quarter, going on a 13-0 run over the first 4:07 to extend its lead to 18 points (42-24). The Dolphins never got closer than within 12 points (52-40 with 8:08 remaining in the fourth quarter) for the rest of the contest.

NC State returns to action at home on Sunday against Davidson. Tip-off between the Wolfpack and Wildcats is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Reynolds Coliseum with live video coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
