DURHAM, N.C. – The NC State softball team traveled to Duke on Saturday afternoon for its first fall game of the season, and earned an 8-3 win in its first-ever meeting with the Blue Devils at Duke Softball Stadium.
The 2017-18 year marks the inaugural NCAA season for Duke's softball program.
NC State collected eight hits in the 10-inning contest, as newcomers Angie Rizzi and Lily Bishop paced the team with tallying two apiece. Three members of the pitching staff, Devin Wallace, Brittany Nimmo and Kama Woodall, saw time in the circle as Woodall earned the win after giving up two hits and one run in three innings pitched.
The contest was scoreless through the first three innings, and Duke took a 2-0 advantage in the fourth on a walk and wild pitch with the bases loaded.
Cheyenne Balzer blasted a two-run home run to center field in the sixth inning to knot the game, and the Wolfpack plated four more runs on two hits and one error in the eighth. Balzer recorded the game-deciding RBI with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, while walks with the bases loaded by freshmen Timberlyn Shurbutt and Chandley Garner and a fielder's choice gave NC State a 6-2 advantage.
The Blue Devils responded in the bottom frame with a solo shot to left field by Hannah Pridemore, but the Pack tacked on two more runs in the ninth inning thanks to Lily Bishop's RBI single to right field and a bases-loaded walk by Nimmo.
NC State returns to action Oct. 6 when it welcomes East Carolina to Dail Softball Stadium for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m.
