RALEIGH – Despite outshooting visiting Elon by a final count of 13-6 Tuesday evening inside Dail Soccer Stadium, the NC State men's soccer team fell to the Phoenix by a final score of 2-0.
Elijah Agu opened the scoring for Elon (4-1-1) in the 18th minute, finding the back of the net for the sixth time this season when he settled a cross from teammate Nick Adamczyk and finished low from six yards away. Austin Hill then doubled the Phoenix advantage in the 42nd minute on a skillful give-and-go with teammates Jaiden Fortune and Will Smith.
NC State was also the recipient of some unfortunate luck during Tuesday's match. Down one goal and pressing for an equalizer in the middle stages of the first half, the Wolfpack earned a corner in the 32nd minute. Francesco Casucci whipped in a dangerous ball into the penalty area that Maximilian Luftl met with his head. Luftl's redirection beat goalkeeper Matthew Jegier and was on its way to finding the back of the net but was stopped by a defender's hand on the goal line.
Down 2-0 late in the first half, NC State nearly pulled within one when Caleb Duvernay ripped a hard shot from close range towards goal. An Elon defender made a solid save with his body on the goal line, and the ball squirted out to Yanni Hachem. The senior struck a shot towards goal that was blocked out of bounds as time expired.
NC State pressed hard in the final 45 minutes but was unable to find the back of the net despite outshooting the Phoenix 6-2 in the second half.
The Wolfpack (1-4-0) returns to ACC action Friday evening at No. 23 Virginia Tech. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. from Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Va.

Real tough break there for the Pack. Pressing hard for a 1H equalizer. Handled on the line. pic.twitter.com/HuYbvUN9d9
