Offensive Firepower on Display in Season Opening 48-14 Win

RALEIGH, N.C. - With a new offensive coordinator and a new starting quarterback, a balanced Wolfpack offensive display kicked off NC State's 2016 season with a 48-14 win over William & Mary. The Pack finished the contest with 262 yards passing and 259 yards rushing, and jumped out to a 28-7 lead at the half thanks to three second quarter touchdowns.
It wasn't just the offense that impressed Wolfpack fans, after giving up a first quarter TD drive, the Pack's defense was stout the rest of the game. On the day, William & Mary gained just 168 total yards for the game - 62 rushing and 106 passing, and just 10 first downs.
WOLFPACK SPOTLIGHT DRIVE
Opening Drive - 8 plays, 70 yards in 3:24
Receiving the opening kick, NC State went right down the field, covering 70 yards in eight plays for the game's first touchdown. RB Matthew Dayes capped off the drive with a 5-yard rushing score, and accounted for 39 totals on the drive (21 rush, 18 receiving). On the drive, starting QB Ryan Finley was 3-of-3 for 40 yards.

NOTABLES
• Not only was today the first time in 306 days that RB Matthew Dayes played in a game, but it was also 306 days since he was even tackled. He sat out spring drills and went through all of fall practice without being tackled in any practices.
• Dayes finished with his sixth career 100-yard rushing game, with 138 yards. It's the highest total for a Pack running back in the season opener since 2000 (Ray Robinson, 139 vs. Arkansas St.).
• For the third time in the last two seasons, the NC State defense surrendered less then 200 total yards of offense - 168.
• Four true freshmen made their NC State debuts: WR Kelvin Harmon on TE Thaddeus Moss offense, CB Nick McCloud on defense and Trae Medaows (NIC) on special teams.
• All three grad transfers saw action, QB Ryan Finley, PK Connor Haskins and C Joe Scelfo.
• Also seeing action for the first time in a Pack uniform: WRs Jakobi Meyers and Vernon Grier, OT Emanuel McGirt, S Jarius Morehead DE Tyrone Riley.
• For the second year in a row, NC State scored touchdowns on each of its first two possessions.
• After today's win, NC State improves to 37-12-2 in the first home contest of the season - since Carter-Finley opened in 1966.
• With the win, head coach Dave Doeren improves to 13-1 at NC State against non-Power 5 opponents.
UP NEXT
NC State will be in road action next weekend, as the Pack travels to East Carolina for a noon contest on Sept. 10.
