NC State earns second win against top-25 opponent this season
NC State battled for a 6-5 win in game two of the twin bill after the Fighting Irish lived up to their nickname in game one, fighting back from a late deficit to earn a 15-14 walkoff victory.
The Wolfpack moves to 23-32 and 6-17 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while the Irish fall to 38-10 and 12-7 in league action.
Game Notes
- Ross broke the NC State single-season record with her 53rd run of the season, after hitting a grand slam in game one of the doubleheader.
- In game two, the Cameron, N.C., native set the single-season record for stolen bases with No. 27.
- Maggie Hawkins also reached a milestone in the second game with the 200th hit of her career.
- NC State earned its second win of the season against a ranked opponent, as the Wolfpack defeated No. 25 California earlier in the year.
- The Wolfpack collected a season-high 14 hits and scored a conference-high 14 runs in the first game of the day.
The Rundown (Game One)
- NC State started the contest great, scoring six runs in the first inning on three home runs. It was the most runs scored in the first inning by the Wolfpack this season and first time the Pack has hit three homers in the frame since April 27, 2013 at Boston College.
- With the bases loaded, senior MHawkins stepped to the plate and clubbed her first grand slam in a Wolfpack uniform and second of her career to give her team a 4-0 lead.
- NC State added two more runs in the frame following solo home runs to right field by Hanna Sommer and Hannah Yeager to grab a 6-0 advantage.
- A wild pitch allowed NC State to take a 7-0 lead in the second.
- Notre Dame countered with six runs in the bottom of the frame to trim the deficit to 7-6.
- Molly Hutchison drove in a pair of runs in the third inning on a single to center field, as NC State stretched the lead to 9-6.
- The Fighting Irish had an answer once again, plating two runs to trim the Wolfpack lead to 9-8.
- The fifth inning was the game's only scoreless inning, as neither team scored in the frame.
- Hawkins left the yard for the second time in the game in the sixth with a solo blast to right center.
- NC State took a 14-8 advantage later in the frame after a grand slam by Ross.
- From there its was all Notre Dame, as the Irish scored seven unanswered runs to rally for a 15-14 walkoff victory.
The Rundown (Game Two)
- Notre Dame struck first in game two of the doubleheader, plating a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout.
- NC State responded in the second with three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
- Alyssa Compton scored on a wild pitch and Meredith Burroughs drew a walk with the bases loaded to plate Macauley Prickett from third.
- Hawkins singled up the middle to drive in Ross to give NC State its third run of the frame.
- The Fighting Irish scored two runs each in the third and fourth innings to grab a 5-3 advantage.
- The Wolfpack rallied in the sixth, as Prickett led off the frame with a single to left center and Ross followed with a hit to center field.
- Hutchison stepped to the plate next and crushed a 3-run homer to right center to give NC State a 6-3 lead, which proved to be the game-winning hit.
- As Notre Dame looked to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh, Molly Martin gloved a ground ball to second base, tagged the runner and fired to first base for the double play to end the game and seal the victory.
- Harli Hubbard earned the win for the Pack, pitching five innings of relief, allowing two runs to go along with two strikeouts.
