RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's track and field team's momentum from a strong indoor campaign has spilled into outdoor season, as the Pack is set for the ACC Outdoor Championships.
The team hit the ACC event standard 29 times this season and holds 16 regional marks.
The squad finished fourth at ACC Indoors, up five spots from its ninth-place finish in 2015. After a 12th-place finish at the 2015 Outdoor ACC Championships, NC State will hope for a similar improvement that it saw during the indoor season.
NC State will lineup a strong squad with 21 athletes ranking top-8 (scoring position) in the regular season ACC standings.
Sprints/Hurdles
After scoring 27 of the team's 62 points during the indoor championships, the sprints squad is primed for another strong conference meet.
Quashawn Cunningham leads the group and is second in the conference in the 200m(21.72) and third in the 100m(10.33). Cunnigham is also a member of the 4x100(39.42) and the 4x400(3:08.75) which are ranked second and fifth in the conference, respectively.
The Pack has plenty of depth in the sprints with three ranked in the top-eight and four sprinters ranked top-10 in the 100m. Jonathan Addison is fifth(10.47), Shannon Patterson is eighth(10.51) and Nyheim Hines is 10th(10.54) in the conference standings. All three scored points during ACC Indoors.
In the long sprints, Patterson is ranked eighth in the 200m(21.17) and Will Krehnbrink leads the squad in the 400m(47.18) for seventh in the ACC. Brian Davis has also broken the 48-second barrier is ranked 15th(47.92) in the event.
In the 400m hurldes, Erin Jenkins is eighth in the conference after a earning a big PR of 53.03. The Pack's 110m hurdlers Josh Gandy(14.53) and Dorian Williams(14.68) are outside of scoring position, but have both earned personal bests for the season and could break into the top-eight with a strong mark.
Mid-Distance/Distance:
Fifth-year seniors Luis Vargas, Meron Simon and Graham Crawford lead the Pack in distance events. The three have combined for seven top-10 distance marks in the ACC. Vargas is ranked fifth in the 1,500m(3:42.67), fifth in the 5,000m(13:50.88) and sixth in the 10,000m(29:16.20). Simon is eighth in the steeplechase(8:59.21) and the 1,500m (3:43.89) and ninth in the 5,000m(13:58.10) Crawford is third in the 5,000m(13:42.55) and fourth in the 1,500m(3:40.69).
Along with the seniors, Sam Parsons enters his first ACC Outdoor Championships with the fourth-fastest 10,000m time(29:11.87) and also holds a top-20 mark in the 1,500m.
Bakri Abushouk and Sebastian Hanson could also add points for the Pack. Both are slight improvements away from a regional qualifying mark and are ranked top-25 in their respective events. Abushouk is 10th in the ACC steeplechase(9:10.42), and Hanson is 18th in the 5,000m(14:08.14)
Throws:
Joshua Davis leads the men's throwers. He is ranked fifth in the hammer throw(2-8'11") and 22nd in the discus(160'3") During the indoor ACCs, Davis earned a bronze medal in the weight throw and advanced to the NCAA Championships where he earned Second-Team All-America honors. David Rocker is a hammer throw specialist and enters the meet ranked 19th in the event with a mark of 172'00".
Jumps:
Addison leads the group of Wolfpack jumpers. The indoor season national runner up is a two-time conference champion in the long jump and holds a PR of 26'9.75" – good for the indoor school record and a USATF Olympic Trials mark. Addison has also cleared seven feet in the high jump and has won an ACC title in that event.
True freshman Christopher Garrick enters the meet was the ACC's second-best mark in the high jump, clearing the bar at 7'0.25", making him one of only two athlete in the ACC to jump over seven feet this outdoor season. During indoors at his first ACC Championships, Garrick finished fifth in the event to earn second-team All-ACC honors.
Multis:
Grant Rivers will lineup in the decathlon. Rivers scored a point for the Pack at the ACC Indoor Championships and is currently eighth in the conference in the event with 6,218 points.
