Tyler Ross hits her team-leading 17th home run
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team came up short in its final home game of season, as the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets slipped past the Wolfpack to earn a 5-3 victory Sunday afternoon at Dail Stadium to clinch the series.
The Pack falls to 22-31 and 5-16 in ACC play, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 22-30 and 7-13 in conference action.
The Rundown
- NC State struck first in the contest with a run in the third inning, as Meredith Burroughs scored on a passed ball to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead.
- Tyler Ross added to the lead the next inning with a solo home run to center field, her 17th home run, which ties for the ACC lead.
- Georgia Tech cut into the deficit with a run in the fifth after an RBI single by Samantha Pierannunzi to make it 2-1.
- The Yellow Jackets grabbed a 5-2 lead in the game thanks to four runs in the top of the sixth.
- NC State threatened in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with nobody out but could produce one run in the frame.
- After a fielder's choice for the first out, Meredith Burroughs walked with the bases loaded to push across a run, but Georgia Tech turned a double play after it to end the inning and hold on to the 5-3 advantage.
Quick Hits
- Ross led the Wolfpack at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, highlighted by her home run and a stolen base, her 25th of the season, which is one shy of tying the program record.
- Cheyenne Balzer, Maggie Hawkins, Alyssa Compton, Macauley Prickett and Hanna Sommer each had one hit in the game.
In the Circle
- Courtney Mirabella started in the circle for NC State and turned in a stellar outing, striking out nine batters in five innings pitched. She allowed one run and departed the game in-line for the win, but the Wolfpack bullpen was unable to hold the lead.
- Harli Hubbard relieved Mirabella and later handed the ball over to Brittany Nimmo to finish out the game.
- For Georgia Tech, Jenna Goodrich pitched a complete game allowing eight hits, three runs and did not strike out a batter.
