WASHINGTON, D.C. - Anthony 'Cat' Barber totaled 29 points and seven assists and NC State shot a season-best 55.4 percent but Duke held on to win 92-89 in the ACC Tournament's second round on Wednesday.
Barber was his usual standout self, shooting 10-for-18 and making four 3-pointers in 39 minutes. The first team All-ACC guard improved his scoring average to 23.5 points per game, which would rank eighth on NC State's all-time single-season list.
Abdul-Malik Abu scored 19 points - and dunked four times - while grabbing nine rebounds. Abu had one of his best games of the season, shooting 9-for-12 from the floor. Caleb Martin chipped in with 16 points and Maverick Rowan, Tuesday's offensive hero, added 15.
Duke (23-9) got 22 points each from Luke Kennard and Brandon Ingram. DU advances to play No. 4 seed Notre Dame on Thursday.
Offensive Explosion: For fans of high-scoring college basketball games, the first half was a work of art. NC State (16-17) shot 62.9 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes and led Duke 53-50. It was the second-highest combined score ever in the first half of an ACC Tournament game (1974's NC State-Maryland final was 55-50 at halftime). Duke shot 61.3 percent in the first half. Both teams combined for 13-for-24 shooting from beyond the arc before halftime.
'March' Gottfried: In his five seasons at NC State, Mark Gottfried has coached the Wolfpack to eight wins in the ACC Tournament. That number currently leads all league teams during that time frame:
