No. 8 NC State baseball shut out Fairfield 4-0 on Wednesday
RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 8 NC State baseball completed its first shutout of the season, sweeping the midweek from Fairfield with a 4-0 win on Wednesday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Stags (3-5) battled through four scoreless frames before a two-out rally produced a pair of Wolfpack (12-2) runs courtesy Tommy DeJuneas, Brock Deatherage, and Josh McLain.
The Pack added single runs in the seventh and eighth to set the final 4-0. NC State's pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts, tying a season high set against Wright State and Niagara.
Deatherage led the offense with a 3-for-3 outing including a triple, two RBIs, a run, and a stolen base. The stolen base marks his third of the year, the three hits one shy of tying his career high. Andrew Knizner submitted the Pack's only other multi-hit effort, a 2-for-4 performance with a run.
Ryan Williamson (2-0) set a new career high with 10 strikeouts over 5 1/3, scattering six hits and two walks to claim the win. Austin Staley retired the only batter he faced. Will Gilbert collected four punchouts in 3 1/3 to score his second save.
