WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –The No. 40 NC State men's tennis team earned its biggest win of the season so far, defeating No. 7 Wake Forest 4-3 in Winston Salem.
The win marked the Pack's first top-10 win of the year and the second year in a row that NC State upset a highly-ranked Wake Forest squad. In 2015, the Pack defeated then-ranked No. 12 Wake Forest.
The victory moves the Wolfpack to 12-7 (1-1 ACC) this season. The seventh-ranked Wake team marks the highest-ranked opponent NC State has defeated since the Wolfpack took down No. 6 North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament during its run to the Elite Eight in 2007.
Match Recap:
The Pack earned its first doubles point in eight attempts, winning on courts one and three. Redshirt freshman Michael Ogden has been the Pack most successful doubles player this spring. He partnered with Ivan Saveljic on court 1 and defeated Wake's top duo of Romain Bogaerts and Dennis Uspensky, 6-3.
Simon Norenius and Thomas Weigel earned the doubles win on court three to seal the point. The senior duo won 6-4 over Sam Bloom and Anthony Delcore.
The win gave the Pack huge momentum heading into singles play, and the Pack's captains carried the team the rest of the way.
All three captains took first-set wins on courts one, two and three. However, the Pack's bottom of the lineup faltered against Wake, as the Demon Deacons took the first set on courts four, five and six.
The trend continued into the second set, and Wake took a 2-1 match lead with singles wins on courts six and four. No. 72 Nick Horton answered back with a dominant win at No. 1 singles, defeating Jonathan Ho, 6-3, 6-2 to tie the match.
Wake retook the lead after winning in straight sets on court five. However, the Pack answered back again with a win at the No. 2 spot. No. 83 Norenius earned his fifth win over a ranked opponent this year, defeating No. 113 Romain Bogaerts, 6-4, 6-3.
With the match tied at three, Weigel entered the third set with Wake's Dennis Uspensky. Weigel went up, 2-0, but fell behind 3-2. From there, the senior won four games in a row to clinch the upset.
