
The Wolfpack On Leap Day

Since 1964, there have been seven instances when Leap Day has brought NC State an extra day of Wolfpack basketball. The Pack owns a three wins on Leap Day, including victories over UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Asheville, and most recently Miami in 2012. Here's a breakdown of the seven times February's extra day has included a Wolfpack men's basketball game:

Feb. 29, 1964 – Wake Forest 71, NC State 55 (Winston-Salem, N.C.)
On Leap Day 1964, NC State traveled to long-time rival Wake Forest. Pete Auksel led the team with 12 points and seven rebounds as the Pack lost to the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest had five players in double figures.

Feb. 29, 1972 – NC State 77, UNC 73 (Reynolds Coliseum)
During the 1971-72 season, the Wolfpack was setting the table for its dynasty. The young Wolfpack, behind sophomore center Tommy Burleson, knocked off No. 3 UNC Chapel Hill 85-84 in what was coach Norm Sloan's 300th win. Burleson led the team with 24 points and 12 rebounds as the team shot 55 percent from the field. UNC-CH's Dennis Wuycik scored 30 points for the visiting Tar Heels.

Feb. 29, 1984 – Maryland 63, NC State 50 (College Park, Md.)
In the season after NC State's national championship run in 1983, the Wolfpack traveled to Maryland at the end of the 1983-84 season and lost to the Terrapins 63-50. Russell Pierre led the Pack with 12 points, going 5-for-6 from the field.

Feb. 29, 1988 – NC State 87, UNC Asheville 76 (Reynolds Coliseum)
UNC Asheville made the trip to Raleigh to take on a Pack squad that would end the season with a 24-8 record. NC State took a 20-point lead at halftime and cruised for the rest of the night. The game was in the middle of a five-game win streak to end the season that helped NC State finish the regular season in second place in the ACC. The Wolfpack had three players in double-figuring scoring, led by Chucky Brown with 25 points and Vinny Del Negro with 23.

Feb. 29, 1992 – Georgia Tech 98, NC State 88 (OT) (Atlanta, Ga.)
Tom Gugliotta led NC State with 29 points and made five 3-pointers, but Georgia Tech survived an overtime battle 98-88.

Feb. 29, 2004 – UNC 71, NC State 64 (PNC Arena)
In a battle between two ranked teams, the Pack had four players in double digits with Marcus Melvin leading the Wolfpack with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

In Mark Gottfried's first season at NC State, the Pack claimed a Leap Day win over Miami. C.J. Leslie led four Pack players in double figures with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
