RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 8 NC State baseball earned a 6-1 win over Wright State on Saturday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
For the sixth time in 2016, the Wolfpack (4-2) started from behind, chasing a 1-0 Wright State (5-1) lead in the bottom second. The Pack tied the game there on Chance Shepard's solo homer, before taking a 2-1 lead in the third. Wright State loaded the bases with nobody out in the top sixth, but Cody Beckman wriggled out of the jam by striking out the first batter he faced and inducing a 5-4-3 double play from the next. Four runs crossed in the decisive bottom sixth, setting the final 6-1.
Evan Mendoza supplied the first three hits of his career and first collegiate RBI in a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored after drawing the start at third. Chance Shepard homered for the second day in a row, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run alongside his second bomb of the year.
Joe Dunand went 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Josh McLain hit a two-RBI double. Preston Palmeiro saw his season-opening hitting streak come to an end at five games, scoring once on a walk. Brock Deatherage drove in a run and scored once. Xavier LeGrant scored once in a 1-for-4 outing. Andrew Knizner contributed a single.
Wolfpack starter Brian Brown (1-0) claimed the win on one unearned run over the first five plus, allowing three hits and two walks with five punchouts. Beckman came two outs from a save, working 3 1/3 of no-hit ball with one walk and four strikeouts. Kyle Smith struck out one over the final 2/3.
