Senior Maggie Hawkins homers twice against Jacksonville
NC State falls to 2-2 on the season, while UNCG moves to 3-1 and Jacksonville improves to 2-1.
Quick Hits Game One (Versus UNCG)
- The Wolfpack struck first against the Spartans with four runs in the top of the second following a pair of walks with the bases loaded and a two-RBI single by Tyler Ross.
- UNCG countered in the third with five runs to take a 5-4 lead on just two hits, but capitalized on an error by NC State.
- An injury to Wolfpack starting shortstop Alyssa Compton forced lineup adjustments, as Lana Van Dyken slid over to shortstop and freshman Brittany Nimmo came in to play third base – the first time either has played the position in their careers.
- In the top of the fifth, the Pack responded with five runs after UNCG pitchers issued five walks in the frame to regain the advantage, 9-5.
- Down to its final out in the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans rallied to score two additional runs, after a two-run homer earlier in the frame, to knot the score at nine forcing extra innings.
- The international tiebreaker rule went into effect in the eighth inning, as both teams started the frame with a runner on second base.
- An error by UNCG allowed Ross, who started the inning on second base, to score giving NC State a 10-9 lead.
- The Spartans scraped together three singles in the bottom of the eighth to push across two runs and defeat the Wolfpack, 11-10.

- Ross led NC State at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance, highlighted by three RBI and a run scored.
- Senior Maggie Hawkins also registered a multi-hit game with a 2-for-5 outing and two runs scored.
- Molly Hutchison and Hannah Yeager each had one hit in the contest.

- Junior Courtney Mirabella started in the circle and pitched the first two innings before giving way to sophomore Harli Hubbard.
- Hubbard turned in a strong performance, notching the longest outing of her career with five innings pitched, striking out four batters.
Quick Hits Game Two (Versus Jacksonville)
- NC State and Jacksonville traded a pair of early home runs, as Hawkins ripped a solo home run for the Wolfpack and Heather Roberts homered for Jacksonville.
- With the score tied at one heading into the top of the seventh, Hawkins left the yard for the second time in the contest with a two-run blast to right center.
- Jacksonville answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run homer by Danielle Baker to send the game into extra innings.
- The international tiebreaker rule was also used in this contest starting with the eighth inning.
- A grand slam by Meredith Burroughs helped NC State take a 7-3 advantage, as the sophomore hit her first home run of the season and second career grand slam.
- The Dolphins would not be denied in the bottom of the inning; however, getting a three-run homer from Kristen Griffith and an RBI single from Jordan Daniels to even the score, 7-7.
- A single to center field in the bottom of the ninth by Emily Sanchez allowed the winning run to score for the Dolphins, as they emerged with the 8-7 victory.
Inside the Box Score
- Burroughs led the Pack offensively with a 3-for-4 performance, including a grand slam.
- Hawkins was 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, the first NC State player to have a multi-home run game this season.
- Hutchison, Ross and Hanna Sommer tallied one hit apiece.
In the Pitcher's Circle
- Mirabella also started the second game of the day, striking out eight batters in eight innings pitched.
- Hubbard came on to pitch the ninth inning and was charged with the loss, as the baserunner who started the frame on second base due to the tiebreaker rules scored.
On Deck
NC State will conclude play in the River City Leadoff Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against Coastal Carolina. The Wolfpack and Chanticleers met in the season opener for both teams, as the Pack earned a 5-1 win.
