NC State defeats Rajin' Cajuns 4-3 Saturday afternoon
LAFAYETTE, LA. - The NC State women's tennis team earned its first road win of the season Saturday afternoon. Four singles sweeps earned the Pack its 4-3 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette, advancing the team's record 4-1.
Claudia Wiktorin and Tayla Stenta netted the Pack's only doubles victory in a 6-1 defeat of Alexandra Way and Abby Johnson but the team was able to find success in singles play against the Rajin' Cajuns. For the second time this season the Wolfpack was able to swing the dual with four singles wins after falling in the doubles competition, previously victorious over #42 William & Mary in a similar 4-3 fashion.
Stenta downed Melissa Burckhartt 6-2, 6-0 while Amanda Rebol defeated Abby Johnson 6-3, 6-0. Playing the five and six singles, Wiktorin earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Juliette Clement and Barbara Mancera sealed the dual with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Dana Brankovic.
NC State's matchup with Louisiana-Lafayette concluded the team's first weekend on the road. The Wolfpack's away record currently stands 1-1 with Saturday's win following a 5-2 loss at No. 13 LSU the previous day.
"Essentially the first match was disappointing, but for the right reasons. We played and competed fantastic, putting ourselves in a great position to pick up a huge win but lacked the experience and steadiness to finish the task. All credit goes to LSU. It is a good team for a reason and extremely well-coached.
"The match against Louisiana-Lafayette was disappointing for the wrong reasons. We came in down two players in doubles and weren't prepared to step up and do the right things. There was too much looking around and a lack of focus which put us in a hole to start off doubles play. Consistency and focus are somethings we to work on day-in and day-out. We are a young team, and it shows at times, but we will learn from this and in the end we were able to get over the finish line. Moving forward, if we can learn to manage ourselves better and find reasons to fight everyday then we should see more linear growth and iron out the ups and downs." - Simon Earnshaw, head coach
The Pack returns to action when it hosts its second doubleheader of the season, Saturday, February 20. The squad faces Florida Gulf Coast at 10 a.m. followed by Elon at 3 p.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
