
Stephen Franken Takes Third at Bridgestone Collegiate

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Led by an impressive third-place finish from sophomore Stephen Franken, the NC State men's golf team earned fifth place at the 2016 Bridgestone Collegiate. In its final tournament action of the fall portion of the 2016-17 season, the Wolfpack shot a solid 840 (-24) through three rounds of play at the Grandover Resort & Conference Center West Course to finish just one stroke out of a tie for third place and two strokes out of a tie for second place.
NC State shot the second lowest round of the day on Monday, carding a 279 (-9) thanks in large part to terrific rounds from Jacob McBride (68), Franken (69), and Justin Hood (69). Hood's score of 69 ties his best career round.
In addition to Franken's third-place finish, sophomore Davis Richards tied for 16th in the tournament field, earning the sixth top-20 result of his young career. Teammate and senior Chad Cox recorded a career best at the tournament, shooting a score of 214 (-2) over the course of the three rounds.
On the individual side, freshman Christian Salzer had a strong showing in just his second career tournament. The Sumter, S.C., native tied for 49th in the field of 84 golfers and finished fifth in the individual standings.

NC State tied for second among the 13 participating teams with a combined 64 birdies. McBride led the way for the Wolfpack in this category, recording 16 total birdies to average slightly more than five per round.
