Women’s Golf In Fifth After First Round Of Tar Heel Invitational

Three players sit among top 20 of individual leaderboard
Hosted by UNC-Chapel Hill at Finley Golf Course, India Clyburn opened the weekend with a three-under par 69 for the second-straight tournament. She sits in fourth place on the leaderboard as her round ties the second-lowest 18-hole score of her collegiate career.
Leonie Bettel and Cecily Overbey also posted rounds of even par or better in Chapel Hill, as Bettel carded a 71 (-1) and Overbey shot 72. Bettel's consistent round featured just one birdie to sit in 12th, while Overbey fired a three-under 33 on her backside to share a tie for 17th heading into round two.
"I was proud to see the team lead in par five play today, which has been our focus since the Cougar Classic. It was fun to see several of our girls on the top of some of the stats, as India (Clyburn) led the field in par three play," said head coach Page Marsh.
"Today was a good start and with experience it will be fun to see them put it to good use to finish out the weekend. This is a very talented group, and we have to learn to manage the margin between what we desire to happen as high achievers and what does happen as human beings. We're poised to do great things and are learning and growing. I have great belief in these young women and am really proud of how well they represent our team, their families, our university and our great game. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do tomorrow."
Laura Kowohl and Naomi Ko rounded out the top five scores for NC State, as Kowohl finished day one with a four-over par 76 and Ko posted a 77.Sarah Bae and Crystal Huang, who are both entered as individuals in the tournament, turned in scores of 75 and 76, in respective order.
Wake Forest leads the tournament with a six-under par 282, while Ohio State and Alabama sit in second and third with scores of 283 and 285, in respective order, on the team leaderboard.
NC State will continue play Saturday at the Tar Heel Invitational, as the team will be paired with competitors from Arkansas and South Carolina between 9:54 and 10:30 a.m. on hole one.
Bae and Huang are slated to tee off at 8:51 and 9:00 a.m., respectively, on the 10th hole.
