RALEIGH - Anthony 'Cat' Barber scored 36 points but a hot first half from Georgia Tech was too much as the NC State men's basketball dropped a 90-83 game on Wednesday night.
Barber torched the Yellow Jackets (12-8, 2-5) with 13-for-27 shooting and he made all eight of his fouls shots. He also had five assists and four rebounds.
Comeback: Down 47-33 at the half, a pair of 3-pointers by Barber and another from Caleb Martin helped NC State mount an impressive comeback. With 11:19 to play, the Pack had trimmed the deficit to 54-53. Georgia Tech would recover and control much of the second half until Maverick Rowan got hot. The 6-7 freshman made three 3-pointers and NC State was within 79-74 in the final minutes.
Georgia Tech's Marcus Georges-Hunt scored 26 points while Nick Jacobs and Adam Smith each scored 20.
Abdul-Malik Abu scored a career-high 22 points for NC State, and had his ninth double-double in the last 12 games.
Gott Said It:
"Give Georgia Tech credit, they came in here and played really well. They pounded the ball inside early in the game, so they deserve the credit. There is no question about that. Brian had his team ready to play and they played well.
"This is the first time all year that I did not like our energy level. I did not like our enthusiasm in the first half. Our team has not done that. Our team has played hard. They responded in the second half, we played with a lot more energy and got the game back to a one-point game. The technical foul is what turned the momentum. We have to have more poise, and it was a costly mistake. That is when the momentum shifted to their favor when we had a lot of momentum in our favor up until that point. We played much harder in the second half. We did not have the energy and enthusiasm in the first half that we have had every night. This team has not played like that, so that was disappointing."
