Pack Edged in Overtime by No. 10 Pepperdine

SAN DIEGO – The NC State women's soccer team (0-2) battled No. 10 Pepperdine to the wire on Sunday afternoon, falling in overtime to the Waves by a final score of 1-0. The Wolfpack nearly scored the match winner in the final seconds of regulation, but a headed attempt by Cailyn Boch hovered right around the goal line and did not cross, according to the match officials.
Freshman goalkeeper and San Diego native Sydney Wootten made seven saves in a stellar Wolfpack debut. She was one of five freshmen who started the match, with classmate Crystal Cordova coming on in the 33rd minute.
Caroline Gentry had State's best opportunity of the first half, running towards the top of the penalty area chasing a through ball. The senior reached it and was one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Gentry's first touch beat the goalkeeper, but was too strong, as she was unable to catch up and slide it into the open net.
Wootten was nothing short of terrific during the first 45 minutes, making four saves, two at full stretch to deny shots which seemed destined for the corner of the net. She was at the receiving end of a hard collision in the 80th minute, forcing her afternoon to end early as teammate Mackenzie Stelljes took over her responsibilities in net.
Pepperdine capitalized on confusion in the NC State penalty area in the 92nd minute of the match (second minute of overtime), as Taylor Alvarado fired a shot into the back of the net from 16 yards out.
The Wolfpack will return to action in its home opener on Thursday, August 27 against Elon. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Dail Soccer Field.
