BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – NC State track and field team members Sam Parsons and Luis Vargas both raced in the 5,000m race at the Hoosier Open on Friday night. The race was the fastest of the season, as the top-five finishers now hold the nation's top-five times in the event.
Vargas finished fifth overall in 13:49.86, setting a new 5,000m PR by almost seven seconds in his first time in uniform for the Wolfpack. His previous 5,000m PR of 13:57.09 was set at the 2015 Raleigh Relays.
With his finish, Vargas now holds the nation's fifth-best time. Only 20 athletes posted faster qualifying times during the 2014-15 indoor season.
Parsons also finished with new personal best, placing 12th in 14:25.61. He set his previous 5,000m indoor PR at the 2014 ACC Indoor Championships with a time of 14:34.94.
Parsons' time currently ranks 24th in national standings. The race marked his first track action since February 2014.
NC State distance runners have taken advantage of the early track season, using their cross country fitness to earn national and conference marks. The men's team holds three of the nation's top-25 marks in the 5,000m, while two on the women's team have top-25 national times.
Just two weeks into the season, NC State has a new school record, two nation leading times, and five top-16 national marks. To qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, individuals must finish in the top-16 of the national standings in each event.
