RALEIGH – The NC State men's basketball team mounted a second-half comeback attempt, but ultimately fell short as hot-shooting Michigan defeated the Wolfpack 66-59 Tuesday evening inside PNC Arena.
Key Stats: Caleb Martin led NC State with 19 points and seven rebounds. Anthony 'Cat' Barber also reached double digits, adding 16 points and four assists.
Maverick Rowan and BeeJay Anya helped lead the rebounding effort, each pulling down seven boards.
Michigan shot 50 percent from the floor for the game, with Caris LeVert leading the way with 18 points and nine rebounds. Duncan Robinson added 17 points off the bench, including five made 3-pointers.
Turning Point: NC State trailed by double digits for most of the second half, but cut the lead to 50-46 with 7:50 remaining in the game. Michigan ended the comeback with back-to-back 3-pointers to increase its lead to 10. The Wolverines led by no less than seven points the rest of the contest.
Gott Said It:"My first thought is that you have to give Michigan credit, they played pretty good basketball. I don't want to take anything away from their defense, they had a good plan. They kept Cat out of the paint, he had a hard time penetrating and getting to the foul line tonight. At the same time we had one of those nights where we couldn't put the ball in the basket. We had a tough shooting night and a lot of that is on us. Again, I don't want to act like Michigan had nothing to do with it, because they did. We had a lot of good, wide-open shots and couldn't make them. Maverick struggled tonight and he has played so well for a freshman. He's been really really good and tonight he had one of those nights. Malik struggled the same way, as he couldn't score inside. We had a lot of good looks but we couldn't put the ball in the basket. Michigan is a really good shooting team, they spread you out and we were concerned with the shooters at times. They used their pick and roll and we were late a couple times on our rotations. We still have to score the ball better than we did tonight. We have got to make shots and sometimes that happens. We struggled to score even around the rim. But our guys played really hard, they never quit competing. We just had a really difficult shooting night. We will learn from it and get better."
