Two Earn Olympic Trial Cuts at RnR Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - NC State track and cross country alumni Joanna Thompson and Matt Sonnenfeldt earned marathon Olympic Trial cuts after competing in the Rock'n'Roll Philadelphia half marathon over the weekend. Sonnenfeldt finished 24th overall with a time of 1:04.58. Thompson covered the 13.1-mile course in 1:14.10 and was the 18th women to cross the line.
Overall 24 men and 21 women earned the half marathon qualifying mark, which qualifies them for the Olympic marathon trials.

The U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials will take place in Los Angeles, Saturday Feb. 13th. The top three men and women will earn spots on Team USA for the 2016 Rio Olympics, while the fourth and fifth-place finishers from each race will be alternates.
NC State's Olympic Marathon History:
In 1984, former Wolfpack distance specialist Joan Benoit became the first-ever women's Olympic marathon champion, winning gold in 2:24:52. During her career, Benoit established herself as an elite marathoner, winning the Boston Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and the Nike OTC Marathon. She also has a host of top-five finishes in marathons around the world.
