The NC State women's tennis team announced its 2016 spring schedule
2016 SPRING SCHEDULE
Â
RALEIGH – The NC State women's tennis team has released its 2016 spring schedule, as announced by head coach Simon Earnshaw.
Â
The schedule features 14 home matches, including four doubleheader events and 11 away matches, including trips to Malibu, Calif., and Baton Rouge, La.
Â
Fourteen of the team's 25 opponents were ranked in the top 50 at the conclusion of the 2015 spring season. Martina Frantova and Tayla Stenta defeated opponents from two of those ranked teams, No. 30 Virginia Tech and No. 18 Clemson, in the championship round of the Pack's final tournament of the fall season.
Â
SIMON SAYS:
"The ACC continues to get stronger and become more challenging which provides us with a huge opportunity every time out. We will be hosting some of the best teams in the nation this spring. It's extremely motivating and something we are really looking forward to. Early in the season we have a few doubleheaders that will test the team and our depth to the max, highlighted by William & Mary and VCU to close out January."
Â
"Our nonconference road schedule is particularly tough. LSU continues its push towards being a national contender and I expect Coach Nilsson to bring Pepperdine back to the forefront of college tennis. Long Beach State is another tournament team and the girls certainly face a challenge but at the same time, we want to be tested against the best and that's what is ahead of us. If we can concentrate on growth, gaining experience and ending better in April than where we start at in January, I fully expect that we will be a dangerous team. This group of players has high expectations and is very motivated and focused. It's a fun and exciting time to be part of the program!" – Simon Earnshaw, head coach
Â
Â
The Wolfpack will open its season at home Jan. 23 in a doubleheader facing Winthrop and North Carolina A&T. The team will host its second doubleheader of the season Jan. 30 against William & Mary and VCU.
Â
Nonconference competition continues Feb. 12 and Feb. 13 when the team travels to LSU and Louisiana-Lafayette. On Feb. 20 the Pack will compete in its third doubleheader at home, hosting FGCU and Elon.
Â
The team opens its ACC slate on the road at Georgia Tech Feb. 26 followed by Clemson Feb. 28. Syracuse will be the Pack's first conference opponent at home with the match set for Mar. 6.
Â
The two furthest road contests are set for Mar. 11 at Long Beach State and Mar. 12 at Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif.
The team returns to Raleigh for a three-match series before travelling to rival UNC-Chapel Hill Mar. 30.
The final home match of the 2016 season is set for Apr. 15 against Wake Forest.
Â
Postseason competition gets underway late-April when the Pack will look to advance in the conference rankings at the ACC Tournament. The ACC Tournament will be held Apr. 20-24 in Cary, N.C.
