Dempster, Horton advance to Doubles Quarterfinals at ITA Regional

The duo has won three-straight doubles matches in their debut tournament
CARY, N.C. – Ian Dempster and Nick Horton stopped a late USC rally to advance to the quarterfinals of doubles action Sunday at the ITA Carolina Regional. In singles play, Horton fell in the round of 16 main draw, while Shoti Meparidze picked up a win in the consulation draw.
Doubles Round of 16:
In their first tournament as a doubles pairing, Dempster and Horton ran through the first two doubles matches, winning both in straight sets. Today's opponents Alex Fennell and Tom Mayronne of South Carolina presented a tougher challenge, as it took a third-set tie breaker for the Wolfpack to advance.
Horton and Dempster took the first set, 6-3, but lost the second set 6-4 after a strong USC rally. The dup fended off Fennell and Mayronne's comeback attempt to win the third set 1-0 (10-4).
Consolation Singles:
Meparidze worked his way into the quarterfinals of consolation singles. The sophomore split his final two matches on Sunday, defeating Anthony Delcore of Wake Forest in the Round of 16 and dropping his final match to USC's Wood Benton.
Meparidze dominated the match against Delcore, winning 6-2, 6-2, but fell to Benton, 6-2, 6-4 in his second match of the day.
Singles Round of 16:
Nick Horton bowed out in the main draw singles round of 16, dropping his match to South Carolina's Gabriel Friedrich, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. The junior had a strong start and broke Friedrich's serve twice in the first set before losing steam.
Up Next:
Horton and Dempster are the lone Wolfpackers left in the in ITA Carolina Regional. The duo will look to defend NC State's 2014 doubles championship in the quarterfinals against Ben Kelley and Joel Roberts of Presbyterian on Monday. Doubles matches are slated to start at 1 p.m.
