Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker to Miami

Wolfpack records a hitting percentage of .324, the highest in an ACC match this season
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women's volleyball players and coaches left it all on the court Friday night, but the Wolfpack dropped a heartbreaking loss to the Miami Hurricanes, 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 29-27, 23-25, 12-15), inside Holliday Gym.
The Wolfpack falls to 12-7 (1-6 ACC), while Miami moves to 12-5 (5-2 ACC) on the season.
Match Notes
- Despite losing the match, NC State tallied more kills (66-64) and had a higher hitting percentage (.324-.282) than Miami. The Wolfpack's hitting percentage was the highest of the season in an ACC contest.
- The Pack also charted 12 team blocks, as opposed to just eight for the Hurricanes.
Match Rewind
- Miami used a 4-0 run to extend its lead in the first set to 23-17 and went on to win the frame, 25-19.
- The Wolfpack countered in the second set with a .346 attacking percentage en route to a 25-18 victory. With the score tied at 11, NC State went on a 7-2 run to take control of the set at 18-13. The Pack closed out the frame with three unanswered points.
- In the third set, the score was tied 13 times but the Wolfpack emerged with the 29-27 set-win. The Canes fought off set point four times, but Perry Ramsey and Blayke Hranicka combined on the block to give NC State the win in the frame.
- The Hurricanes rallied at the end of the fourth set with five consecutive points to win it, 25-23. NC State led 23-20, but Miami would not be denied and forced a fifth set.
- Miami led in the early stages of the fifth set, but NC State used a 3-0 run to knot the score at 12. After tying the score, the Hurricanes countered with three consecutive points to win the fifth set, 15-12 and the match, 3-2.
Top Performers
- Hranicka matched her career high with 17 kills in the contest to go along with a .324 attacking percentage. Sophomore Kaitlyn Kearney tallied 16 kills and a .444 hitting percentage, while Ramsey had 14 to go along with a .393 clip.
- At the setter position, junior Maggie Speaks recorded a double-double with 52 assists and 11 digs. The Camden, S.C., native narrowly missed a triple-double tallying seven kills in the match.
- Junior libero Rachel Eppley collected 12 digs. Ramsey chipped in with 10 digs to tally her first double-double of the year.

NC State returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. against No. 18 Florida State. First serve is set for 1 p.m. inside Holliday Gym at Broughton High School.
