Junior Tyler Ross homers in each game
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The NC State softball team opened its fall schedule with a pair of shutout wins at Campbell on Sunday, winning the first game, 10-0 and the second game, 2-0, at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
"I'm pleased with the way we looked today," said head coach Shawn Rychcik. "I didn't expect to get two shutouts, so I'm really happy with our pitchers and the way we pitched.
"We have some things we need to get better at, but I'm really happy with where we are at this point."
The Wolfpack received contributions from multiple players in the first game of the twin bill, highlighted by home runs from junior Tyler Ross and redshirt junior Hanna Sommer. Senior Maggie Hawkins chipped in with two hits in the contest.
Junior Courtney Mirabella started in the circle for NC State and pitched the first three innings to earn the win before giving way to Harli Hubbard. The sophomore from Camas, Wash., hurled two innings and then Mirabella reentered the game to pitch the last two innings.
The duo allowed just two hits, giving up one hit apiece.
In game two, junior Hannah Yeager contributed an RBI-single to put the Wolfpack ahead, 1-0, and Ross left the yard for the second time on the day to give NC State a 2-0 lead, which stood as the only runs scored in the contest. Hawkins also tallied a pair of hits in the game.
Freshman Brittany Nimmo started in the circle and earned the win after tossing four scoreless innings. Hubbard pitched the next two innings and Mirabella closed out the game by striking out the side in the seventh. The trio gave up just three hits in the contest.
NC State returns to fall action on Thursday, Oct. 15, when it hosts Pitt Community College. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 5 p.m. at Dail Stadium.
