Wolfpack RTC has nine advance to U.S. World Team Trials
LAS VEGAS, NEV. – A pair of rising redshirt-sophomores on the NC State wrestling team brought home top-three finishes at the 2018 U.S. Open this weekend from Las Vegas.
Â
After placing second at the NCAA Championships in March, Hayden Hidlay took second at 70 kg in his first senior-level event wrestling freestyle. Starting as the No. 7 seed, Hidlay went 4-0 and outscored his foes 36-9 in reaching the finals, including a rematch of the NCAA finals with a 7-5 win over Pantaleo of Michigan. Hidlay fell in the finals to former two-time All-American Jason Chamberlain, 4-1.
Â
Another current member of the Wolfpack had a memorable run in only his second senior-level tournament. Nick Reenan captured third place at 86 kg, following up on his third place finish at the Bill Ferrell earlier this month.
Â
After dropping his first bout to the tournament's No. 2 seed, Reenan won six straight, with a pin and four tech falls, and outscored those six opponents 53-7. In the third place bout, Reenan picked up a 10-0 first period tech over former Nebraska All-American Dudley.
Â
Other former NC State wrestlers that placed: Quinton Godley was fourth at 74 kg, Lee Davis was seventh at 79 kg, and Mike Kosoy was also seventh at 125 kg. Wolfpack RTC resident Timmy McCall was sixth at 92 kg.
Â
After this weekend's results, the Wolfpack RTC now has nine qualified for the U.S. World Team Trials, which will take place May 18-20.
Â
In addition to the six from this weekend's U.S. Open placers, Nick Gwiazdowski (already has advanced to the Final X), Tommy Gantt (Bill Ferrell champion) and Michael Macchiavello (NCAA champion) also have advanced.
Â
A future member of the Wolfpack as also in action in the UWW Junior bracket. Incoming freshman Trent Hidlay placed sixth overall at 79 kg. His top win of the tournament was a 3-2 decision over #1 seed and former Cadet world medalist Wittlake of Oklahoma State.
