The NC State track and field team saw a full day of action at three meets Friday. The first day of the Wolfpack's weekend was capped off by Erika Kemp's third-place finish in the 5,000m.Â
MT. SAC RELAYS:
Kemp was the only distance runner to compete in NC State uniform at the world-famous Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, Calif. Friday evening. The Wolfpack senior raced in an event in which she earned All-America honors during the 2017 outdoor season and in which she owns the program's second-best mark.
Kemp took third place, clocking a 15:43.28 5,000m in her first time running the event this outdoor season. Her mark not only put her on the podium, but it also was the nation's No. 3 time and the ACC's best time in the event.
Former NC State All-American and current office assistant Luis Vargas ran on the men's side of the 5,000m. The Wolfpack alumnus, who earned All-America honors in the outdoor 10,000m in 2016 and won silver at the ACC Championships in the 5,000m that same season, ran a 13:41.43 to place ninth among a field of tough competitors.Â
Four of the team's sprinters were also in action at the prestigious meet.Â
Gabriele Cunningham ran two events on the Wolfpack's first day at the meet, competing in the 100m hurdles and 200m. She took fourth in the hurdles with a 13.46 and seventh in the 200m with a 23.84.Â
Cravont Charleston, Dylan Peebles, and Shannon Patterson ran on the men's side of the 200m. Peebles led the way for the Wolfpack men, placing fifth in 21.25.
VIRGINIA CHALLENGE:
Freshman thrower Tyson Fortenberry picked up his first collegiate discus win, taking gold in the event at the Virginia Challenge with a 169' 1" (51.55m) mark on his first throw of the day.
Michelle Cobb moved into the NC State record book with the program's seventh-best outdoor triple jump mark. Her 40' 11.5" (12.48m) jump was good for sixth place at the meet.Â
Bethany Neeley represented the Pack in the women's 3,000m steeplechase where she posted a 10:46.23 ACC qualifying time.
DUKE INVITATIONAL:
Three of NC State's distance runners represented the Wolfpack in the 1,500m and the 5,000m at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.Â
Gianna Frontera highlighted the group, taking first in the women's 5,000m. Running the event for the first time this season and only the second time in her outdoor track and field career, she clocked a 17:33.53.Â
