Postgame Notes
-NC State improved to 15-8 in its all-time series with Boston College, which includes an 8-2 record at home. The Wolfpack has now won four straight games against the Eagles.
-With the victory, NC State extended its winning streak to seven games. The last time that the Wolfpack won seven consecutive ACC games was during the 2000-01 season.
-The Wolfpack shut down the Eagles' interior game and dominated in the paint, outscoring the Eagles 30-8 in that category.
- NC State entered the contest ranked fourth nationally in rebound margin (+11.0) and continued its success, outrebounding Boston College 39-26 (+13.0).
-The Wolfpack led by as much as 20 (72-52) in the contest and never trailed by more than three (23-20).
"Energy and urgency was a big factor," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "We had worked the last couple of days on handling the post double team, and I thought earlier in the game, we kind of had scripted a few things, and we did a nice job. Then we went through a long stretch there where it kind of gave us some problems, and we didn't make quite as many good decisions. In the second half, I thought Akela (Maize) did a better job passing out of it, and then we were able to get a couple of good looks. I think that was it. I think also our defense, we were able to turn them over a little bit and make some things happen that led to some offense. And we shot better. Unfortunately, sometimes when your shot's not going, you have a tendency to hang your head and let it affect the rest of your game. Maybe by hitting a couple of shots early in the second half, it gave us some confidence, gave us some energy, and here we go."
NC State held a 17-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter after closing the period on a 10-2 run. Maize hauled in an offensive rebound and connected on a tough put-back basket to put the Pack up 11-8, and a Chelsea Nelson jump shot with 37 seconds left in the quarter gave the Pack a seven-point lead at the first break.
Boston College went on an 8-1 run of its own to open the second quarter, with a basket by Martina Mosetti tying the score at 18 apiece at the 7:04 mark. The Eagles led by three (23-20) in the late stages of the second period, but the Wolfpack remained poised. Leslie drained the Wolfpack's first three of the outing with under a minute remaining in the half to even the score at 23, and Ealey converted two late free throws to level the score at 25 at the break.
Despite making only two shots in the second quarter amidst early offensive struggles, the Wolfpack held the Eagles to just 7-26 (.269) shooting in the first 20 minutes of play.
NC State kicked things into high gear coming out of halftime, as the Pack made its first four shots of the second half. Leslie ignited Reynolds Coliseum with a blocked shot and a bucket in transition to give NC State a 40-31 lead and force Boston College to call a timeout. The Wolfpack continued to find ways to score and opened up a 15-point lead (54-39) on its way to posting the highest single-quarter shooting percentage of the season (.750).
The Eagles never got closer than 13 in the final 10 minutes of play as the Wolfpack secured its 12th home win.
NC State travels to Coral Gables, Fla., on Thursday, Feb. 8 to continue ACC competition against Miami. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live television coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
