Wolfpack signee enrolls early to go through spring workouts with team
RALEIGH, N.C. – After signing a National Letter of Intent (NLI) in the fall, Nina Sharpton has enrolled early and will go through spring workouts with the NC State volleyball program.
Â
A 5'10" setter from Palm Beach, Fla., Sharpton finished her senior season at Park Vista Community High School with 442 assists, 87 digs, 64 blocks and 18 service aces to garner 9A First Team All-Palm Beach honors.
Â
She was also tabbed a Prep Volleyball Senior Ace, as one of the nation's top recruits.
Â
"We're thrilled to have Nina join us early," said head coach Linda Hampton-Keith. "Anytime an athlete takes the time to invest in their future by enrolling early, it's a huge step for them and the program.
Â
"Nina will add a lot of depth to our setter position and the true benefit of enrolling early is that she'll get acclimated to college, get some training under her belt in the weight room and get used to the culture of our program and how we do things. That will help her hit the ground running when the season comes around in the fall."
Â
As a junior, Sharpton collected first team all-conference accolades and was also an all-area honorable mention. Additionally, she was named to the Prep Volleyball 2018 Watch List and the 2016 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Phenom List.
Â
The prep standout has also competed with USA Volleyball and helped Team Florida USA High Performance win the 2014 National Championship. Sharpton guided her team to the 2015 AAU National Championship in the 15 Open division and a third-place finish at the 2015 Girls Junior National Championship (GJNC).
Â
Sharpton started training with the USA Volleyball National A1 Program in 2013 as an eighth-grade student. She excels in the classroom and has been a member of the honor roll every year of high school.
Â
Comes from an athletic family, as her cousin Darryl Sharpton, Jr., played football at the University of Miami and went on to play in the NFL and another cousin Kenny Mixon played football at LSU and also played in the NFL.
Â
Sharpton is also related to Civil Rights Activist Al Sharpton.
Â
NC State's record-breaking season came to a close in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against second-ranked Texas after the Wolfpack defeated Oregon State in the first round for the program's first victory in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
The Pack finished the year with a 21-12 overall record, highlighted by a program record 15 ACC wins. NC State also compiled a perfect 10-0 mark in home ACC matches for the first time in program history.
