
Wolfpack Earns 66-53 Win at Rival UNC-Chapel Hill

NC State heads into first ACC bye on a three-game winning streak

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Led by a career-high scoring effort of 22 points from point guard Kaila Ealey, the NC State women's basketball team (15-5, 4-3 ACC) earned a 66-53 win at rival UNC-Chapel Hill on Thursday afternoon. The victory was NC State's fourth in its last five meetings with the Tar Heels and sends the Wolfpack into its first ACC bye date on a three-game winning streak.
Ealey led all scorers and was joined in double figures by teammates Akela Maize (13 points, four rebounds, four blocks) and Aislinn Konig (11 points, career-high six rebounds). DD Rogers pulled down nine rebounds to lead the team.
Paris Kea led the offensive charge for the Tar Heels, scoring 16 points on 7-20 shooting from the field. She was the lone UNC player to achieve double figures. Reigning ACC Freshman of the Week Janelle Bailey grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go with her nine points.
Postgame Notes
-NC State now leads the series 55-50 overall and improved to 18-26 in games played at UNC.
-The victory was NC State's fourth true road win of the season (4-2).
-NC State had its best shooting performance (26-57, .456) since shooting 30-60 (.500) in an 83-72 win at Vanderbilt on Dec. 19.
-The Wolfpack outrebounded UNC 41-29 and has won 17 of 20 rebounding contests this season.
Trailing 10-8, the Wolfpack concluded the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take an 18-10 advantage through the opening 10 minutes of play. Though narrowly outscored in the second quarter, the Wolfpack used a strong shooting (13-32, .406) and rebounding (25-19) advantage to take a 32-26 advantage into the halftime break.
Ealey led the Wolfpack with eight points on 3-5 shooting from the field while UNC's Kea led all scorers with nine points, but it took 12 shots to accomplish this. Wolfpack freshman Kai Crutchfield had a strong opening half, scoring five points on 2-4 shooting in eight minutes of play.
UNC (13-6, 3-3) began the third quarter on a 9-2 run to briefly claim the lead at 35-34 with 6:24 remaining in the frame. The advantage would swing back and forth a few times over the course of the next few minutes before the Tar Heels built up a four-point advantage (42-38) with 3:34 left in the period. NC State caught fire to close out the third quarter, ending it on a 14-2 run capped by an Ealey three-pointer with one second left to give her team a 52-44 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
The Tar Heels twice pulled within eight points (54-46 and 56-48) early in the fourth quarter, but the Wolfpack would allow them no closer the rest of the way, scoring 10 of the game's final 15 points to close out the victory.
NC State will now have a week away from competition and will return to action at Wake Forest on Thursday, Jan. 25.
