Senior Ade Taiwo records two assists in first seven minutes on the field

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The NC State men's soccer team fought back from a two-goal deficit at William and Mary on Monday evening to force overtime, but ultimately fell 3-2 in its first road match of the 2017 season.
Clayton Sparks brought the Wolfpack (1-1-0) within one goal when he scored in the 75th minute on an assist from Ade Taiwo and freshman Manny Perez scored his second goal of the young season just four minutes later to level the match at 2-2, also on an assist from Taiwo.
A Julian Ngoh header from a Tribe corner in the 93rd minute ended the match in favor of preseason Colonial Athletic Association favorite William & Mary (1-1-0).
"I thought the team showed a lot of character being down 2-0 and tying it up and getting it to OT," NC State head coach George Kiefer said. "We can learn a lot from this match, as it always comes down to the small details. I look forward to a few good days of training with the guys before our next match on Friday."
The Wolfpack had the better of the early play, controlling the opening stages of the match and creating two good scoring opportunities. William & Mary absorbed the pressure and scored on its best opportunity of the first half, taking a 1-0 advantage in the 30th minute on a Ryder Bell goal. A miscue on a defensive clearance gave the Tribe possession in the Wolfpack's defensive area, and William Eskay found Bell open inside the area, where he finished to the far post from 15 yards away.
William & Mary came out fast to start the second half, nearly doubling its advantage in the 47th minute before Brad Sweeney made a clutch defensive save off the line following a corner kick. The Tribe found its second goal of the evening when Reeves Trott elevated inside the area and nodded down a Marcel Berry cross inside the far post.
Taiwo entered the match for the Wolfpack in the 72nd minute, immediately making an impact. His shot in the 75th minute was blocked and fell within range of Sparks, who was able to fight through a chaotic sequence to stuff it into the net from close range.
Just four minutes later, Perez scored his second goal in as many matches with a tremendous strike inside the upper corner of the far post from 20 yards away. Taiwo added the assist on this one as well, playing a controlled pass to Perez after winning possession with his back to the goal.
NC State now returns to Raleigh for a three-match home stand. The Wolfpack will begin this stretch by hosting LIU Brooklyn at Dail Soccer Stadium on Friday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m.
