Horton Selected to Represent Australia at World University Games

RALEIGH, N.C. – Former NC State men's tennis player Nick Horton has been selected to compete for Australia at the upcoming Summer World University Games.

The World University Games, also called the Universiade, are an international sports competition that is held every two years and hosted by different countries. This summer's competition marks the 29th Summer World University Games and will be held Aug. 19-30 in Chinese Taipei. More than 5,000 student-athletes from over 120 countries will participate in this sporting event that is considered second in importance to the Olympics.

Horton was a member of the NC State men's tennis team from 2013 to 2017. Originally from Sydney, Australia, he graduated from NC State in May with a communications degree. A two-time All-ACC honoree, Horton ranks seventh in school history with 84 career singles victories and sixth with 65 doubles victories. He ended the 2016-17 season ranked No. 80 in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

Since graduating, Horton has spent his summer playing in the singles and doubles draws of various Futures events. Last week, he teamed with rising Wolfpack junior Igor Saveljic to reach the doubles quarterfinals at the Austria F2 Futures. The pair also made it to the quarterfinals of the Austria F1 Futures earlier this month.

In singles play, Horton reached the main draw at those same tournaments. His deepest run came at the beginning of the month when he advanced to the round of 16 at the Austria F1 Futures.

Horton will cap off his summer at the Summer World University Games. Tennis competition begins at the newly constructed Taipei Tennis Center on Monday, Aug. 21 and will conclude on Tuesday, Aug. 29.
