Wolfpack alum claims second consecutive national championship in air rifle
FORT BENNING, Ga. – Just four days after claiming the smallbore national championship at the USA Shooting Championships, former NC State rifle standout Lucas Kozeniesky put together another #STATEment performance Saturday to win the national championship in the air rifle competition.
Â
It marks the second consecutive year that Kozeniesky has clinched the national championship in air rifle at USA Shooting Championships. Last year, the Fairfax, Va., native claimed the top spot a month prior to competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Â
Kozeniesky took the crown in the men's air rifle event with a total score of 1251.8. He fired a mark of 622.9 on the first day of the competition and a 624.9 on day two of air rifle to own a tally of 1247.8 heading into the finals session.
Â
A strong showing in the finals added four points to his cumulative score to give Kozeniesky the victory by two-tenths of a point (1251.8 to 1251.6). He enjoyed a very decorated career in a Wolfpack suit, as he was the program's first Olympian, owns every individual record and was a six-time All-American.
Â
Current NC State team member Zach Eisenberg turned in a strong outing to finish among the top 30 in the event with a score of 1220.5. In the junior competition, he finished 12th with his result. William Marciniak also competed and fired a total score of 1215.7.
Â
On the women's side, Lauren Phillips highlighted Wolfpack shooters with a 10th-place finish in smallbore. She notched a 577 on the first day and a 579 on day two to compile a total score of 1156.
Â
The Seabeck, Wash., native logged an 821.1 in air rifle to conclude the competition ranked among the top 20. Kendra Jacobs, who recently transferred into the NC State rifle program, finished closely behind Phillips at No. 24 with an 817. Rising sophomore Claire Zanti took part in the event and fired an 811.5.
Â
