Â
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The NC State baseball team will make its 29th NCAA appearance in the Lexington (Ky.) Regional this weekend and open play against second-seeded Indiana. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. Friday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3/Watch ESPN, while radio coverage will also be available on WKNC 88.1 and on GoPack.com for premium subscribers.
Â
NC State enters the regional with a 34-23 overall record and Indiana is 33-22-2. The Wolfpack and Hoosiers have never met in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Last Time Out
In its last outing, NC State was defeated by second-ranked UNC-Chapel Hill in the ACC Championship, 12-4. Indiana also dropped its most recent game, falling to Minnesota in the Big Ten Tournament, 9-8.
Â
NC State in the NCAA Tournament
The Wolfpack is making its third consecutive appearance in an NCAA Regional and 15 in the last 20 years. NC State is 49-56 all-time in NCAA Tournament games.
Â
Back to Kentucky
For the second consecutive weekend, the NC State baseball will be playing in the state of Kentucky. Last week, the Pack was in Louisville for the ACC Championship and this week the squad is an hour and a half southeast in Lexington.
Â
Kentucky Ties
NC State's volunteer assistant coach Taylor Black will have a nostalgic moment this weekend when he coaches on the same field where he played collegiately. Black was a shortstop for the Kentucky Wildcats and will be making the return trip as a member for the Wolfpack's coaching staff.
Â
Indiana's volunteer assistant coach, Matt Freida, also played at Kentucky and was Black's teammate. The two will square off in the matchup between the teams Friday at 7 p.m.
Â
Dunand Named All-American by Collegiate Baseball
Junior Joe Dunand was tabbed a second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper (CBN) Thursday morning. The Wolfpack's starting shortstop owns a .284 batting average on the year with a team-high 16 home runs and 47 runs batted in (RBI).
Â
His 16 homers are a career high and ties as the fourth most in the ACC. Earlier this year, he was named CBN National Player of the Week, College Sports Madness National Player of the Week and Co-ACC Player of the Week.
Finishing Strong
Despite dropping its last game against UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State pitchers Sean Adler and Joe O'Donnell combined to retire the last 13 Tar Heel batters. Adler threw 3.1 hitless innings and O'Donnell tossed a perfect an inning.
Â
Connection to Indiana
NC State and Indiana both advanced to the 2013 College World Series (CWS) and while in Omaha, the teams stayed at the same hotel. They were on different sides of the bracket that year.
Â
Additionally, both teams had a player selected in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft as former Wolfpack standout Carlos Rodon was selected third and former Hoosiers standout Kyle Schwarber was picked fourth.
