George Kiefer and his staff making an immediate impact before first season in Raleigh
May 4, 2017
RALEIGH – The new NC State men's soccer coaching staff continues to make an impressive impact before its team takes the field in an official match. In late April, the 2017 recruiting class put together by head coach George Kiefer and his staff of Jeff Negalha, Kyle Nicholls, and Samuel Castellanos was ranked No. 10 nationally by Travis Clark of TopDrawerSoccer.com.
Below in italics is an excerpt from Clark's article on the top 25 recruiting classes in the nation.
No. 10 – NC State
There's a new regime in Raleigh, and signs are positive for a quick turnaround. A big class draws from a number of different sources, including an under-the-radar player like (David) Norris, who took a gap year in 2016, (Brad) Sweeney, an overseas addition from the UK, and a couple of transfers to add to the team's depth.
"Typically I'm not too excited about recruiting rankings, but I'm impressed with my assistants in that most programs work for two years to put together a class and we've just had a few months," Kiefer said. "I'm really excited about the future and I'm learning how many top players from this country want to play in the ACC. It's also refreshing to have one of the best youth clubs in the country right in our backyard."
NC State's 2017 recruiting class includes signed commitments from the following players with rankings provided by the 2017 Boys IMG Academy Top 150:
Emanuel Perez (Capital Area Railhawks Academy – No. 33)
David Loera (Orlando City – No. 59)
Mac Gourlay (Capital Area Railhawks – No. 105)
David Norris (Orlando City)
Jose Morales Jr. (Capital Area Railhawks Academy)
Brad Sweeney (West Bromwich Albion)
Anthony Ruggiero (Huntington Boys Club)
*Christoph Schneuwly (Tyler Junior College)
*Vincent Durand (James Madison)
*Transfers
Emanuel "Manny" Perez recently returned from a stint with the U.S. Soccer U-18 National Team during which he scored a goal in a 1-1 draw with Hungary and earned a start and played the full 90 minutes in a 2-1 win over Belarus.
