LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The NC State baseball team opened play in the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship with a 6-1 win against the Boston College Eagles Tuesday afternoon at Louisville Slugger Field.
Â
The Wolfpack picks up its 14th win in its last 16 games to move to 34-22 on the year, while the Eagles fall to 25-27. Redshirt senior Johnny Piedmonte picked up the win with five innings pitched to remain unbeaten at 7-0, while Sean Adler threw four innings of one-hit, shutout relief to notch his third save in the last four games.
Â
"I'm really proud of how we played today," said head coach Elliott Avent. "Boston College had won 10 of its last 18 games and is playing with a lot of confidence, so it was a really tough game. We had a couple balls go our way in the first inning to get us off to a good start.
Â
"I thought Brett's [Kinneman] home run on the 0-2 pitch in the seventh was outstanding and Johnny [Piedmonte] does what he does, he's 7-0 for a reason."
Â
NC State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the contest thanks to three runs in the bottom of the first. The Wolfpack has outscored opponents, 46-17, in the first inning of games this season. Stephen Pitarra, Josh McLain and Brad Debo started the frame with consecutive singles to load the bases.
Â
Brett Kinneman drove in the first run on an RBI groundout and Will Wilson came up big for the Wolfpack with a two-RBI single to right field.
Â
Boston College threatened in the top of the fifth, as the Eagles loaded the bases with nobody out to chase Piedmonte. Sean Adler entered the game to pitch for the Pack, induced a groundout double play and a popup to Joe Dunand at shortstop to escape the jam as BC managed just one run in the frame.
Â
Kinneman launched his ninth home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh, as he crushed an 0-2 pitch to give NC State a 6-1 lead. Debo singled and Dunand walked to score on Kinneman's blast.
Â
Â
Debo notched his 21st multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 performance to go along with two runs scored. McLain also recorded a pair of hits and scored a run, while Pitarra and Evan Mendoza also had a hit in the game.
Â
Kinneman extended his reached base safely streak to 16 games, which ties as the longest of the season for any Wolfpack player. Andy Cosgrove and Wilson each extended their streaks to 11 games.
Â
On the mound, Piedmonte allowed six hits, all singles, in five innings of work with one earned run. Adler pitched the next four innings and yielded just one hit in scoreless relief.
Â
NC State returns to action Friday night at 7 p.m. against second-ranked and second-seeded UNC-Chapel Hill. The winner will advance to the semifinals on Saturday.
