ATLANTA - The NC State softball team shut out Georgia Tech, 3-0, in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon to clinch its weekend series against the Yellow Jackets at Mewborn Field.
With the win the Wolfpack improves to 14-25 with an 8-4 mark in ACC play, while the Jackets fall to 12-27 on the season and 5-10 in conference action. This marks the third series NC State has won this year against conference opponents.
Rychcik's Review
"We did a nice job early on with getting a big hit in the first inning and another in the second," said head coach Shawn Rychcik. "We had a lot of opportunities to put some more runs on the board, but did a great job of getting on base. Their pitcher (Emily Anderson) walked eight and we put ourselves in a good position with the early lead.
"Peyton (Silverman) did a good job down the stretch and our defense really picked it up. We had an opportunity to make some plays and get out of innings, and did a nice job of getting some outfield throws into the infield and getting some tags. It was a solid game all the way around and was happy for Peyton. Today was going to be interesting because she threw in the other two games this weekend. Tracie (Adix-Zins) mixed it up on them and we got a lot of easy pop ups. Overall we're just happy to get the series."
Game Rewind
-NC State plated a run in the first inning, a RBI single by Alyssa Compton down the left field line. Caraway scored from third base after hitting a one-out double to left field and advancing to third on Molly Hutchison's groundout to second base.
-The Pack extended its lead to three in the second inning. Tyler Ross singled to left field with the bases loaded to bring Haley Finn across home plate, and Hutchison was walked on loaded bases to score Macauley Prickett.
-After leaving a runner on base in the bottom of the second, the Yellow Jackets were retired in order the next two innings thanks to strong defensive work by the Pack.
-The teams both left a pair of runners on base in the fifth, and the Pack threatened in the top of the sixth with loading the bases on two outs. Ross led off the frame with a walk and stole two bags to reach third. Hutchison followed with a one-out walk and Cheyenne Balzer drew a two-out walk.
-Tech tried to threaten in the bottom with two outs on the board. Malea Bell hit a single to left field and Jessica Kowalewicz tried to make it to third after getting hit-by-pitch, but was tagged by Finn on a throw from Ross at left field.
-Compton and Finn each gloved a ground ball in the final two outs of the game to seal the shutout after the Pack was retired in order in the top of the frame.
Inside The Box Score
-Peyton Silverman pitched her 17th complete game and her third shutout of the season, giving up four hits and only walking one batter.
-Compton and Ross each tallied a hit and one RBI, while Caraway hit her sixth double of the season.
-With Ross's two stolen bases in the contest, she now holds a team-best 18 on the season and 55 in her career.
