Evan Mendoza and Brad Debo each homer in the contest
RALEIGH, N.C. – Brian Brown pitched six strong innings on the mound, while Evan Mendoza and Brad Debo each homered to lift the NC State baseball team to a 4-3 victory against No. 22 Florida State Saturday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Â
With the win, the series is now even at one game apiece and the teams will meet in a decisive game three Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Â
Brown picks up his first win of the season to move to 1-0 on the year, after missing the start of the season with an injury. The Wolfpack hands Florida State starting pitcher Tyler Holton his first loss, as he entered the contest 4-0. Cody Beckman recorded the final two outs for NC State to earn his first save in 2017.
Â
"It was huge win because this league is so crazy," said head coach Elliott Avent. "If you look at this a couple of weeks ago Florida State was number one in the country. We're a good baseball team and they're a really good baseball team too.
Â
"That pitcher today hadn't given up two home runs all year and we hit two in one game. It was a really good win and I'm proud of all the guys that came in."
Â
Junior Evan Mendoza started the scoring in the contest, as he crushed a three-run homer over the left field wall to give NC State a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After fouling off four consecutive pitches, the Sarasota, Fla., native crushed a breaking ball for his second home run of the year.
Â
It was just the second home run that Holton has allowed this season.
Â
Brad Debo put the Wolfpack ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth with a solo blast over the right field wall. After swinging through the previous pitch to push the count to 1-2, the freshman made a great adjustment and smashed the next pitch he saw for his third round-tripper of his collegiate career.
Â
Florida State got on the board in the top of the fifth after a sacrifice fly by Matt Henderson to right field on a close play at the plate to make it 4-1. The Seminoles added two runs in the seventh thanks to a two-run blast from Rhett Aplin to trim the NC State lead to 4-3.
Â
Wolfpack reliever Tommy DeJuneas retired Florida State in order in the top of the eighth. A pair of walks started the ninth for the 'Noles, but Shane Shepard made a nice play on a fly ball along the first base line in foul territory for the first out.
Â
Beckman entered the game next for NC State to face left-handed hitting Aplin and he induced a ground ball to Will Wilson at second base, who gloved and stepped on second before firing to first for the game-ending double play.
