Wolfpack tallies consecutive shutout victories
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Three NC State pitchers combined to limit East Carolina to just six hits and the Wolfpack collected 13 hits to earn a 6-0 shutout win against the Pirates Wednesday evening at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Â
Senior Sean Adler started on the mound for the Pack and pitched 5.1 innings to pick up his fourth win of the season. He finished the contest with seven strikeouts, highlighted by striking out the side in the bottom of the third with three looking strikeouts.
Â
NC State (22-20) chased East Carolina (22-20) starter Jacob Wolfe after just three innings, as he was hit with the loss to fall to 4-3 on the year. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs.
Â
Brett Kinneman ignited the NC State offense with a leadoff single through the left side in the top of the second and Evan Mendoza followed with a double down the left field line. Kinneman raced home to score on an RBI groundout by Will Wilson to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Pack extended the advantage to 2-0 after an RBI single by Andy Cosgrove to plate Mendoza from second base. Joe Dunand opened the fourth with a double off the wall in right center and Kinneman stepped to the plate next and lined a single up the middle to push the NC State lead to 3-0, chasing East Carolina starter Wolfe from the game.
Â
In the eighth inning, Dunand launched his third homer in the last two games, a no-doubt two-run blast over the left field wall to stretch the NC State lead to 5-0. The Wolfpack junior is now tied for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) lead with 15 home runs, which is also tied for sixth in the NCAA.
Â
The Wolfpack added a run in the top of the ninth following Cosgrove's double off the wall in right center and an RBI single up the middle by Stephen Pitarra.
Â
NC State collects its second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. It marks the first time that the Pack has registered consecutive shutouts since 2014 when NCSU defeated Notre Dame 1-0 on March 8 and 7-0 on March 9.
Â
The Wolfpack returns to action this weekend when Virginia Tech heads to Raleigh for a three-game series. Friday's game is set for 6:30 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park.
