Wolfpack and Eagles meet in first-ever ACC game at Fenway Park
BOSTON – In the first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) game played at Fenway Park, the NC State baseball team came up short against Boston College, 8-3, in the Sixth Annual ALS Awareness Game Saturday evening.
Â
The game was played in honor of former Eagles captain Pete Frates and former Wolfpack standout Chris Combs, who have both been diagnosed with the disease. It was also the first time that BC has held its annual ALS game at Fenway Park.
Â
Boston College (13-22, 4-15 ACC) jumped out front early with four runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Eagles capitalized on four hits and a walk to take an early advantage in the contest.
Â
NC State (20-18, 8-11 ACC) got on the board in the top of the fifth after Evan Mendoza doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a groundout by Brett Kinneman to make it 4-1. The Wolfpack trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the sixth after a two-RBI double into the left field corner off the bat of Brad Debo.
Â
Unfortunately, Boston College answered in the bottom half of the inning with four runs to stretch the advantage to 8-3 thanks to six hits and a pair of errors in the frame.
Â
Despite collecting 10 hits in the game, NC State was only able to push across three runs as the Pack left eight runners on base. Debo, Kinneman and freshman Will Wilson each tallied two hits in the game to lead the Wolfpack.
Â
Sean Adler started on the mound for the Pack and was hit with the loss (3-6), while Jacob Stevens earned the win for Boston College with 6.2 innings pitched to move to 4-4 on the year.
Â
NC State and Boston College will return to the field Sunday for games two and three, as the teams will play a doubleheader starting at 10:30 a.m. at Shea Field.
