
Pack Softball Drops Doubleheader With Notre Dame

RALEIGH - The NC State softball team dropped its doubleheader with Notre Dame on Friday evening at Dail Softball Stadium. The Wolfpack was edged out by the Fighting Irish in the first game, 4-3, and fell 5-0 in the nightcap.
NC State moves to 15-27 on the season and 8-6 in conference play, while Notre Dame improves to 25-15 with a 10-7 mark in ACC play.
Game One Rewind
-Notre Dame grabbed an early 1-0 lead on Caitlyn Brooks's RBI double to right center, scoring Ali Wester from second after she hit an outfield single and stole second base.
-Tyler Ross quickly knotted the game when she led off the bottom frame with a home run down the right field line.
-In the third inning, Ross hit a two-run blast to center field to give the Pack a 3-1 advantage. Prickett just beat the throw by the Irish's shortstop to lead off the inning with a single.
-Notre Dame threatened in the fourth inning, loading the bases with two infield singles and a walk on two outs, but Alyssa Compton fielded a ground ball to Brittany Nimmo at third base to get out of the jam.
-The teams were scoreless next three innings, and in the top of the seventh Morgan Reed belted a three-run home run to give the Irish a one-run edge over NC State.
-In the bottom frame the Pack was unable to rally as the order was retired on two groundouts to the shortstop and a pop up to third base.
-Silverman earned the start in the circle and threw all seven innings, striking out four batters and walking one.
-Ross led the team at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance along two runs and three RBIs. She now holds eight home runs on the season.
Game Two Rewind
-The Irish struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning on two sacrifice flies. A double to right field and bunt single was followed by a stolen base to put runners on second and third and start the scoring plays.
-Both squads were scoreless in the next two innings, but Molly Martin was left on third in the third after hitting a leadoff single to right field and advancing on a sacrifice bunt and groundout to the shortstop.
-In the fourth inning Kimmy Sullivan went deep to left field to add a third run to her team's score.
-The teams were kept at bay in the next two innings with a runner stranded in the top of the fifth for the Irish and in bottom of the sixth for the Pack.
-Reed hit a two-run homer to left field in the seventh after Maddie McCracken led off the frame with an outfield single, giving Notre Dame its final two runs of the contest. 
-Silverman went the distance in the circle with her second complete game of the day, not walking any batters in the contest.
-Compton led the team's batting order with two hits in her three trips to the plate.
-NC State tallied its 16th double play of the year in the fifth inning when Nimmo scooped up a grounder and tagged third, then threw to Balzer at first base.
On Deck
The teams will conclude the series Saturday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. in the Pack's annual Kay Yow Spring Game presented by Rex Healthcare.
