NC State Rolls Past Miami
4/14/2017 6:39:00 PM | Men's Tennis
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's tennis team downed Miami 5-2 at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. It's NC State's fourth ACC victory in its last five matches and moves the Pack to 13-11 (4-5 ACC), while Miami falls to 8-10 (2-7 ACC).
NC State is finding its form deep into ACC play. Since March 26th, the Pack has only lost once, falling in a 4-3 decision with the deciding point coming in the tiebreak of the third set of the final match.
"We did a good job today. The team as a whole is battling and being scrappy and it pays off," head coach Jon Choboy said. "Miami plays good doubles. They have solid doubles records all the way through. They won a big match last weekend, so they were confident. We talked about coming out much more aggressive in doubles. We did that and got a lead on the courts, which is critically important. We did what we had to do in singles. Hats off to our guys."
"We'd like to be five-of-five here, but we have another great opportunity tomorrow and I think that is what the guys are focused on."
Match Recap:
The Pack claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Alexis Galarneau and Micheal Ogden upset No. 40 Max Andrews and Jesse Flores with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles. Ivan Saveljic and Igor Saveljic added a 6-4 victory from court three to clinch the point.
In singles play, NC State extended it lead to 3-0 with two quick singles wins. No. 109 Galarneau won his team-leading 23rd match of the year with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on court two and Georgiy Malyshev won the 22nd match of his season with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court three.
Miami responded to the Pack's run with a match on court six, but NC State clinched the overall result minutes later as Igor Saveljic won 7-6(3), 6-2 on court four to seal the victory.
No. 80 Horton grinded out a 6-4, 6-7(0), 1-0(7) win over No. 46 Piotr Lomacki to earn his fifth win of the year over a ranked opponent and his 19th of the season.
Miami closed out the match with a result on court five to bring the score to 5-2.
