Â
RALEIGH, N.C. – A school-record 10 NC State wrestlers will be competing at the 2017 NCAA Championships set to take place next week in St. Louis. Today, the NCAA announced the seeds and brackets, with NC State having five of its wrestlers seeded among the top-16 in their respective weight classes.
Â
• Junior Kevin Jack - #2 at 141 pounds
For the second straight year, Jack enters as one of the top seeds at 141 pounds. This year he is the No. 2 seed, a year after he was seeded No. 3. As a freshman in 2015, Jack went from unseeded to All-American with his fifth place finish.
Â
The 2017 ACC Championship Most Outstanding Wrestlers, Jack is coming off a second straight ACC title and has won 27 straight matches this season – the second-longest streak nationally for matches during this current season.
Â
• Redshirt-junior Michael Macchiavello - #10 at 184 pounds
Macchiavello was also a redshirt last season, and will be making his first trip to the NCAA Championships. After going 20-22 overall in his first two seasons, Macchiavello had a breakthrough 2017 with a 23-6 mark, including five ranked wins and an All-ACC finish.
Â
• Redshirt-sophomore Sean Fausz - #12 at 125 pounds
Fausz will be making his second straight trip to the NCAAs at 125 pounds, last year he went 1-2. An ACC finalist for the second year in a row, Fausz moved down to 125 pounds on Jan. 23 and posts a 9-2 record at that weight, including a top-8 win in the ACC semifinals.
Â
• Redshirt-senior Sam Speno - #12 at 149 pounds
Speno redshirted last season, but has two NCAA trips under his belt. Speno wrestled as both a freshman and sophomore at the NCAA Championships, and returns for the first time since 2014. This year, Speno is 22-8, 9-1 in duals, and has won seven of his last 10 against ranked foes.
Â
• Redshirt-sophomore Jamal Morris - #15 at 133 pounds
Morris will also be making his second straight trip to the NCAAs, as he went 2-2 last year including a defeat of the No. 14 seed. Morris made his way into the Pack's lineup at 133 pounds at the beginning of the second semester, and finished as the ACC runner-up.
Â
Adding in the six seeded wrestlers form last year's squad, the 11 seeded NC State wrestlers over the last two years are the most for NC State in a two-year span in school history. In fact, NC State had a combined 11 seeded wrestlers total the previous 23Â years - 1993-2015.
Â
Of the 10 from NC State that qualified, six will be making their first trip to the NCAA Championships.
Â
Reshirt-senior Mike Kosoy (285), redshirt-juniors Brian Hamann (165) and Michael Macchiavello (184), redshirt-sophomore Malik McDonald (197) and freshmen Thomas Bullard (157) and Nick Reenan (174) will all be competing in the NCAA Championships for the first time in their careers.
Â
Jack (2015 and 2016) along with Fausz and Morris were all in the field last year – and all won at least one match and combined to go 6-6.
Â
In addition, Speno was an NCAA Qualifier in both 2013 as a freshman (133 pounds) and as a sophomore in 2014 (141 pounds).
Â
NC State is one of only two schools nationally with 10 NCAA Qualifiers this season – Oklahoma State. NC State is also one of only two schools nationally with multiple true-freshmen NCAA Qualifiers – Penn State.
Â
In head coach Pat Popolizio's first five seasons at NC State he has had 31 NCAA qualifiers, the second-most in a five-year span at NC State in school history (34, 1988-92).
Â
There will be two sessions each day, beginning on Thursday, March 16 at noon with the First Round.
Â
Unprecedented coverage of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships features three consecutive nights of prime-time coverage on ESPN for the first time beginning Thursday.
