NC State boasts pair of All-Americans for first time since 1974
COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the first time since 1974, the NC State rifle team had two student-athletes claim All-America honors in the same season, as Lucas Kozeniesky and Lauren Phillips collected the distinction from the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) and the National Rifle Association (NRA).
Â
Kozeniesky was tabbed an NRA First Team selection in the air rifle event and a second team honoree in smallbore, while claiming third team accolades from the CRCA. For Phillips, she earned second team All-America honors from the NRA in air rifle and was an honorable mention from the CRCA.
Â
The NRA All-America teams are composed of 10 student-athletes, while only five garner a spot on the CRCA squads.
Â
Kozeniesky finished his senior campaign with the fifth-best air rifle season average in the nation with a 594.86 clip. The Olympian broke the program record in the air rifle discipline with a score of 599 in the Wolfpack's win against Memphis, one point shy of a perfect score which tied for the highest score by a collegiate rifle shooter in the country this season.
Â
In smallbore, he logged a season average of 580.21 to lead the team with the 23rd-best mark in the nation.
Â
Kozeniesky secures All-America honors for the second consecutive season and becomes the first Wolfpack shooter to garner multiple AA honors since Frank Sweeny (1972, 1974).
Â
For Phillips, the All-America selection is the second of her career, as she collected the honors as a freshman at Nebraska before transferring to NC State.
Â
The Seabeck, Wash., native turned in an excellent season in the air rifle event, registering a season average of 592.23, the 12th-best clip in the nation. She logged a career-best 596 score in the Wolfpack's home victory versus North Georgia.
Â
She was also strong in the smallbore competition for NC State, as she recorded the team's second-best season average with a 578.29, which ranks among the top 35 in the country.
Â
NC State finished the season ranked ninth in the country, just one spot shy of earning a bid to the NCAA Championships as a team.
