With the 2017 softball season getting underway Friday, GoPack.com caught up with freshman Jade Caraway to discuss her experience so far at NC State and thoughts heading into her first season with the Wolfpack.
Â
Q: How does it feel that you're into your second semester of college already?
A: "My time here so far has gone by really fast. Spending a lot of time at the field preparing for the season has definitely made it go by quickly, but I'm really excited for this weekend and I think the team has been preparing well and we're all ready to get into the season."
Â
Q: How did your first semester at NC State go?
A:Â "It was definitely an adjustment. I think being alone and away from my family has been difficult and has made me have to grow up and become more independent. I think the coaches and my teammates have made it much easier adjusting to being here. I don't know how I would have done it without them but the time has really flown by."
Â
Q: What do you think the biggest adjustment was transitioning from high school to college was?
A: "Just having to make my own decisions and be responsible for myself and everything I do is probably the biggest adjustment. I don't have someone there all the time to make sure I'm doing what I need to do and I have to be more independent and take care of myself."
Â
Q: Do you know what you want to major in or are you still exploring your options?
A: "Technically I'm still in exploratory studies but I recently applied to communication and want to go into a media concentration. I want to do something in sport communication in the broadcasting area."
Â
Q: How do you think the fall softball season went for you?
A: "Personally I was nervous but again the team being around me made it easier with the adjustment into college. The fall season definitely helped to prepare me for what we're about to go into as the spring season comes up. As a team it was a successful fall though, we finished undefeated and that gives us motivation heading into the season."
Â
Q: What are you looking forward to most about the season?
A: "I'm looking forward to all of our preparation and practice being displayed on the field, and showing everyone what we've been working so hard to do. I know we're prepared and we're all just excited to get on the field together, show our great chemistry and let that be displayed for everyone."
Â
Q: When did you start playing softball?
A: "I started when I was seven."
Â
Q: What made you want to play at NC State?
A: "As soon as I came here I knew it was a place that I could see myself going and I felt very at home. The coaches made me feel like I was a part of the team already, and from the time I came here I felt like I was a part of something bigger. I knew I could be a part of something that was building and was going to be successful."
Â
Q: Do you have a favorite softball memory growing up?
A:Â "It was just last year but my in my senior season my high school team won the state championship. We came very close for three years and it was awesome in my senior season to be able to accomplish a goal that we had for four long years."
Â
Q: What is your favorite part of practice and what is your least favorite part?
A: "My favorite part of practice is coming together with my team everyday. It's always interesting, we always have stories to tell and there's never a dull moment. Just seeing everyone's will to get better and wanting to be successful is my favorite part. I guess my least favorite part when we have running before practice and then having to turn up the energy high during workouts. Nothing's really that bad though I really don't have any complaints."
