Defeats East Carolina, falls to Arkansas
RALEIGH - The NC State women's tennis team split its doubleheader on Friday as it fell to Kansas and then bounced back to win handily against East Carolina.
NC State 3, Kansas 4
The Wolfpack dropped a tough match against Kansas, falling 4-3 in the first match of the day, which came down to the final set on court five. NC State won the doubles point before the Jayhawks tied the match with a straight-set singles win at court four, as Anna Rogers fell to Kansas' Nina Khmelnitckaia, 6-2, 6-3. No. 36 Martina Frantova downed Kansas' No. 65 Anastasia Rychagova to give NC State a 2-1 advantage before the Jayhawks rattled off wins at No. 2, No. 3 singles to take a 3-2 lead. The Pack rebounded to tie the match at 3-3, as Amada Rebol defeated Kansas' Nikolaeva, 6-0, 6-2.
The match came down to No. 5 singles, where Bianca Moldovan went a full three sets with Kansas' Toran Ribes. After splitting the first two sets, the match came down to the third set where Toran Ribes ultimately captured the win, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
NC State 6, East Carolina 1
Shortly after, the Pack returned to take on East Carolina in the Pirates' first match of the season. NC State earned the doubles point to take an early lead before heading into singles play. From there, the Wolfpack continued to pull away as the two NC State freshmen earned wins. Rogers was first to finish, as she breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win over ECU's Maria Storozheva. Adriana Reami followed suit as she earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Michelle Castro. East Carolina won its only point of the match on court two as Claudia Wiktorin dropped a three-set match to Lisa Hofbauer, 6-1, 2-6, 3-6. No. 36 Frantova rebounded from a first set loss to win the No. 1 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, giving NC State the point it needed to clinch the match.
In the final two matches of the night, Rebol won the No. 5 singles over Sarah Sarjoo, 6-2, 3-6, 10-1, and Moldovan recorded a 7-5, 6-1 win over ECU's Nastja Rettich to close out the match.
The split matches move NC State to an overall 4-2 record, while Kansas advances to 3-1 and East Carolina falls to 0-1.
Simon Says
"Kansas is a very well coached team—they've made huge improvements the last couple of years. We couldn't find a way to get through those three-setters. But I thought we put ourselves in a good position in the doubles. We're disappointed because we're trying to get to the next level, but there was a lot we can learn from it," said head coach Simon Earnshaw.
"It's not easy coming off that right into East Carolina. There wasn't much to say after the Kansas match to get us in the right head space. ECU made us work, but the fitness of our players is a point of pride, and even if mentally we were a little down, we could at least make it real physical and that was key.
Moving forward, we have more doubleheaders coming up. We have to desire to be better, and I think it's quite clear we can be. Today was positive, and we will take that and use that to our advantage."
