CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 18/19 NC State women's basketball team (22-7, 12-4 ACC) concluded the 2016-17 regular season with an important road victory on Sunday afternoon, winning 59-48 at Virginia inside John Paul Jones Arena.

The win has the Wolfpack tied for fourth place in the ACC standings with No. 14/14 Louisville, and since the Wolfpack defeated Louisville 72-70 in overtime on Feb. 2, NC State earns the No. 4 seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament. Postseason play begins for NC State at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 3.

Twelve ACC wins for the Wolfpack is the most achieved by the program since the team went 12-4 in league play during the 1997-98 season, the same year of the program's first trip to the Final Four.

"I'm proud of our kids. We hit a couple of bumps in the road early in the year back during our non-conference schedule, and when we went home for Christmas break I was worried if any of them were going to come back (laughter). It had been a rocky couple of weeks leading up to that.

"I'm just so proud of our kids. Virginia is such a good defensive team: I think you mentioned they are second in the country at defending the three. Some tough matchups out there, but our kids did a great job. I'm really proud of how they hung in there and found a way to get it done."

Dominique Wilson led all players with 17 points on 5-12 shooting. She was joined in double figures by 12 points from Ashley Williams, who went 4-6 from distance. NC State was strong defensively, holding Virginia to 16-56 (.286) shooting and its lowest point total of the entire season.

Postgame Notes
-NC State led for 38:41.
-The Wolfpack earned a 37-36 rebounding edge.
-DD Rogers led all players with seven rebounds.
-Miah Spencer scored seven points to go along with six rebounds and six assists.

NC State got off to a great start, shooting 50 percent from the field en route to taking a 19-11 lead through the first 10 minutes. The Wolfpack stepped things up even further on the defensive end in the second quarter, holding the Cavaliers to a meager 2-12 (.167) success rate from the field. Williams was hot from distance in the opening 20 minutes, leading all scorers with nine points on 3-5 shooting from range to help the Wolfpack to a 31-20 halftime advantage.

Chelsea Nelson came alive in the second half for the Wolfpack, scoring all eight of her points and collecting all four of her rebounds during the final 20 minutes after playing just four minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.

NC State stretched its lead as far as 13 points on two occasions in the third quarter before taking a 41-32 lead into the final 10 minutes. The Cavaliers would pull within seven points on four occasions during the fourth quarter, but never came any closer.

The Wolfpack opens play at the 2017 ACC Tournament on Friday, March 3 at 11 a.m. NC State will play the winner of Virginia Tech/Clemson vs. Louisville in this quarterfinal game.
